While purchasing non-comedogenic products is a great preventative measure for healthy skin, there are no strict regulations on how comedogenic they are, which means there is no 100% guarantee.
Doing your homework, reading the ingredients list and purchasing from a brand you trust is KEY.
So what ingredients are comedogenic (pore-clogging)?
Now, here’s the part where it gets a little tricky. The ingredient itself is not always the problem. Concentration plays a HUGE role. Here are a few examples.
- Certain types of silicon (derivatives can be good or bad)
- Petroleum jelly
- Lanolin
- Isopropyl myristate
The ingredients list is usually in the order of concentration. If the good stuff is in the top 5 ingredients listed, that’s generally acceptable. Avoid heavier formulas if you have acne-prone skin, and opt for more lightweight products.

The difference between oil-free and non-comedogenic
While Oil-free foundations are beneficial for acne-prone and oily skin, they’re not guaranteed to be non-comedogenic. Oil-free products can still have pore-clogging ingredients as some non-comedogenic foundations may not be oil-free.
