9 Foolproof Ways to Always Apply Your Foundation Flawlessly.

Beauty Secrets· Lifestyle· Skincare

Hey girlies, let’s talk foundations. There are a few makeup beginners in our community, and I wanted to do a post helping with a makeup issue those just starting out would find useful. So, I figured foundations would be a great place to begin to help the “rookies” – lol we were all one at some point, become much more confident in their beauty game. It is the first step to makeup (after skin prep ofcourse).

Here are nine (9) ways to achieve a flawless foundation application:

Prep Your Skin:

Always start with a clean, moisturized face. Properly moisturizing your skin helps keep it hydrated, which can prevent your makeup from looking cakey or flaky. The key to flawlessly applied foundation is to start with the base prep. A good moisturizer will help it glide on smoothly, evenly and prevent your skin from looking dull. Two of my favourite moisturizers for layering under makeup are this one and this one (this also doubles as a primer). Check out this under $20 skincare routine for an easy and affordable routine for beginners.

Choose the Right Foundation:

Selecting the best Foundation depends on a few things; your skin type, and the type of finish you want (matte, dewy or sheer). Here’s my favourite dewy foundation and if you would rather have a matte finish this one is pretty amazing too. The type of foundation (cream, liquid, powder), and the shade, make sure it matches your skin tone. But how do you choose a foundation shade? Test a few shades on your jawline to find the perfect match. The beauty industry has caught up with creating foundations that cater to many different skin shades and undertones. No longer are the only releases ten shades of tan. Foundations like this one apply smoothly and give a flawless photo finish every time. Another one with a good range of shades to choose from is this.

If you suffer from acne prone skin, here’s a roundup of the best non-comedogenic foundations to help prevent breakouts.

If ordering online, I suggest Sephora or Ulta and find a brand that uses a wide range of models. Choose one whose complexion you think closely resembles yours or the top two. That way, you can easily return to nearby stores.

Use a Primer:

Using a primer before applying makeup has several benefits. A primer will help your makeup last longer and look more natural. It fills in pores and fine lines, creating a smooth, even surface for flawless foundation application. Not only does it help your makeup adhere to your skin better, making it last longer throughout the day, but it also helps controls oils and shine. I’ve yet to see one person who hates this primer. If you want a two for one get this primer and moisturizer combo, I always feel so luxurious whenever I use it.

Choose the Right Tools:

Use a foundation brush or a beauty sponge for a seamless application. I especially can’t recommend a beauty blender enough, especially for beginners. Avoid using your fingers as they can leave streaks, but if you still choose to, always go over it with a blender or brush. If you’re a beginner here’s a blending sponge, you’ll love.

Blend, Blend, Blend:

Make sure to blend your foundation into your hairline, jawline, and neck to avoid any harsh lines. Don’t forget to also blend to your ears if you’re wearing your hair up or have a short haircut.

Use a Setting Powder or Setting Spray:

A setting powder will help your foundation stay in place all day, and a setting spray will give it a natural finish and help it last longer. This spray and this one from Morphe are my top two setting sprays. For powder, get a translucent one like this one or one with a tint like this from Laura Mercier.

Your makeup will look its best 20-45 minutes after the initial application when it has warmed up to your skin and settled. So set it and don’t fret it.

Apply in a Well-Lit Room:

Always apply your makeup in an area with great lighting. You can choose to use natural lighting or a ring light with a large enough mirror so you can see clearly. This way, you’ll be able to see any spots you may have missed.

Check out this step by step everyday makeup routine for days when all you have is 20 minutes to get ready.

Use Patting or Pressing Motions: Pressing in instead of pulling or wiping also helps to prevent streaks and patches in your foundation. Gently pushing the product into the skin instead of just letting it sit on top aids in for flawless application.

Less is More:

Start with a small amount and build up if needed. It’s easier to add more than to take away.

Remember, practice makes perfect. The more you practice, the better you’ll be at applying your foundation flawlessly. What other topics would you guys like for me to discuss?
